The Best Springtime Activities To Do With Kids

At We Make Kids Smile, Dr. Agusto and their team want your kids to be as healthy as they can be. We know that a healthy smile is part of whole-body health. Overall health for kids includes a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and getting lots of fresh air and sunshine. Here are a few of our favorite springtime activities to do with kids; we hope they will be yours too. You can do these springtime activities with your kids or use them as inspiration to create your own!

1. Have a picnic.

A fantastic way to enjoy some outdoor time with your kids is to have a picnic. You can take them to the beach or the park for a picnic, or you can spread a blanket on the ground in the backyard and bring out some snacks. Sitting together and enjoying the sunshine and fresh air is a wonderful way to make memories.

2. Start a garden.

Gardening is a wonderful way for kids to develop a healthy relationship with food. Learning how plants grow and tending to their gardens will keep kids active and engaged all summer long. And digging in the dirt is just fun, no matter how old you are! Let kids choose the fruits and vegetables they like but suggest a couple new ones for them to try. Then, the kids can have fun harvesting those fruits and veggies and turning them into healthy meals and snacks.

3. Do some bird-watching.

Getting up early on a spring day might not sound like a lot of fun, but it can be! If it’s a family event to get up early and head for the park to see some birds, your kids probably won’t mind the early wakeup time. Pick up some healthy smoothies or fruit for breakfast on the way and share a breakfast picnic in the park to make it really special.

4. Go for a hike.

Family hikes are a super fun way to encourage kids to be active and give them time outdoors to soak up that spring sunshine. There are plenty of great hikes in the area that are kid-friendly. And if you want to take a day trip, there are even more options within driving distance. One of the most fun family-friendly hiking destinations is Assateague Island, which is about an hour away. There are three trails on Assateague Island that are under a mile and level enough for strollers if you have small kids. But the best part of visiting Assateague with your kids is seeing the wonder on their faces when they see the wild ponies that live on the island.

5. Spend the day at a park.

Local parks are a great resource for parents who want to spend some quality time outdoors with their kids. Pack a cooler with lunch, snacks, and lots of water and head for a day out at Hallowing Point Park or Parkers Creek Preserve. If you’re going to Hallowing Point Park, bring some balls so you can take advantage of the baseball, soccer, tennis, and basketball facilities.

6. Visit the dentist.

Visiting the dentist may not sound like a lot of fun, but it can be! We love to see smiling faces in the spring and summer. If your kids haven’t had their spring dental cleaning yet, make an appointment today so they can enjoy the rest of the spring and summer with a healthy smile.

7. Visit a petting zoo.

Kids and animals go together like chocolate and milk. Spending an afternoon running around on a spacious farm and interacting with a lot of animals will be a day your kids will love. Green Meadows Petting Farm and Spider Hall Farm have a huge variety of animals that your kids will be excited to see, like goats, horses, sheep, llamas, rabbits, and more.

8. Build an obstacle course.

Your kids can exercise their imaginations and their bodies by building their own obstacle course in the backyard. With materials they can dig up in the garage, the yard, and the house, you and your kids can create a fun obstacle course with things they can climb on, run through, and dive into. Your kids will have a blast playing on the obstacle course in the sun. Just make sure they drink plenty of water!

9. Make some sidewalk art.

Another fun springtime outdoor activity that will allow your kids to use their imaginations and their motor skills is drawing with some sidewalk chalk. Kids love to draw on the sidewalks and driveway with sidewalk chalk. Draw a hopscotch board and challenge them to a few rounds of hopscotch!

10. Go for a bike ride.

Family bike rides are another great family outdoor activity that will keep kids from getting too much screen time. Ride around the neighborhood or take the kids to get some ice cream on a spring evening. There’s nothing better for kids than staying active, being healthy, and enjoying the mild spring weather with the people they love.
